Hunting and Fishing

Union Creek Resort is the perfect lodging option for your next Fishing and Hunting Trip.

Hunting and fishing in Southern Oregon is renowned for its beauty and abundance of opportunities. Author Zane Grey fell in love with the Rogue River after a 1919 fishing expedition and ended up setting up a cabin on it, writing about the Rogue in both Tales of Freshwater Fishing and Rogue River Feud.

“It was a river at its birth and it glided away through the Oregon Forest with hurrying momentum as if eager to begin the long leap down through the Siskiyous,” wrote Grey in Rogue River Feud.

The area at and around Union Creek Resort is a sportsman’s paradise with ideal fishing and hunting possibilities in every direction. Situated in the lush Rogue River National Forest with Union Creek, the Wild & Scenic Rogue River, and surrounding alpine lakes, we are a perfect basecamp for anglers and hunters who regularly enjoy our historic cabins and vacation rentals.

After a long day out on the waters or in the woods, Union Creek Resort’s warm, comfortable accommodations are great for relaxing and gathering with friends and family. Enjoy some pool or foosball in the Lodge’s game room, or unwind with an Oregon microbrew or local wine from our well-stocked Country Store! And Beckie’s Café is ready to serve delicious, home-style meals suited for a big appetite.

For fishermen, there’s fly fishing, conventional tackle, and guided fishing trips available in a variety of scenic locations. Union Creek Resort boasts countless fishing holes on the Rogue River and our own Union Creek, a 15-mile tributary of the Rogue. Both are stocked by Oregon Fish & Wildlife. There’s also nearby Lost Creek Reservoir, Crater Lake, and other mountain lakes.

Fishing includes trophy salmon and steelhead, as well as rainbow trout, brook trout, cutthroat trout, and German brown trout. While fishing on the Rogue River and Union Creek is open year-round, the Spring Chinook salmon season runs May through the end of July. Fish will weigh in at 15 to a whopping 40 pounds. Fall Chinook season runs from August through December.

Southern Oregon steelhead fishing has two prominent seasons: winter steelhead season runs from January through April and summer steelhead are found August through November. Adult summer steelhead are found in the Upper Rogue in great numbers, and the Rogue River receives more than 300,000 returning steelhead per year. Each season offers spectacular opportunities for the adventurous angler.

Not many people know you can actually go fishing at Crater Lake, but you can – and you don’t even need a license! While not native to the lake, fish were introduced from 1888 to 1941 and today Rainbow Trout and Kokanee Salmon are still filling the waters. There’s no limit on how many you can catch, but you can only use artificial lures and flies. Fishing is open year-round but realistically fishing season is May 20 through October 31 due to snow. You can access the lake by Cleetwood Trail on the north side of the lake – there’s about .25 mile of rocky shoreline for angling. Fishing allowed from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. There are also several streams in Crater Lake National Park, but they are difficult to access because they’re located in steep canyons.

Why rough it camping when you can enjoy the warm and comfort of a historic cabin or vacation rental at Union Creek Resort. Find out what many Southern Oregon hunters already know: our spacious and homey accommodations are a great place to relax after an adventurous day in the woods. Each season, hunters from across the region come stay with us in both small and large groups.

Hunters have access to several pristine wilderness areas nearby for hunting deer, elk, and bear in season, as well as game bird and water fowl including quail, grouse, and turkey.

The Union Creek Country Store rents fishing poles and tackle, and sells tackle and bait. We sell fishing licenses available for full year, 1-day, 2-day, 3-day, 4-day and 7-day, with in-state, out-of-state, juvenile and senior rates.
