Crater
Lake National Park
Just
23 miles from Union Creek Resort, Crater
Lake National Park, with its sparkling deep blue water
offers breathtaking panoramic views to hikers, bikers, skiers,
snowmobilers and motorists alike.
This
year, Crater Lake celebrates 100 years of stewardship. On
May 22, 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt signed the proclamation
making Crater Lake National Park the nation's sixth national
park.
This high cascade range lake, recognized worldwide as a scenic
wonder, is known for its intense blue color and spectacular
views. Crater Lake is the seventh deepest lake in the world
and the deepest lake in the United States at 1,932 feet. The
incredible blue of the water comes from the fact that blue
is the last color to be absorbed by deep water. In 2001, scientists
determined that the water in Crater Lake is the purest water
in the world.
Visitors
to the park enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities,
such as, hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, trail rides, skiing,
snowmobiling and wildlife watching. During summer, visitors
may navigate the Rim Drive around the lake or enjoy boat tours
on the lake surface.
Diverse
interpretive programs enhance visitors' knowledge and appreciation
of this national park, 90% of which is managed as wilderness.
